Rockfall Closes Stawamus Chief Trail
On December 27, a rockfall closed the main trail at Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. The debris, including trees and rocks, damaged the trail and created a safety hazard.
The incident occurred below the junction with the Sea to Summit Trail.
Frost-jacking, a process in which water enters small cracks in rock, freezes, expands, and loosens the rock, is suspected to be the cause. Rockfall is a normal and ongoing hazard in this area, and hikers are always advised to remain alert. Authorities report that the rockfall likely occurred late Boxing Day, and fortunately, nobody was injured.
The trail will remain closed while authorities assess the damage and carry out necessary repairs. At this time, no reopening date has been provided.
